Holy Places

The Tomb of the Holy Theotokos is located within the Church of the Holy Dormition, across the Kidron Valley between the Mount of Olives and the Old City of Jerusalem, below the Jerusalem-Jericho road. When descending from the road an open courtyard is found where one can proceed through the main entry and descend the 47 steps to the tomb of the Holy Theotokos. On the way down the steps to the right side is found the tombs of Sts Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Holy Theotokos. On the opposite side of the steps is found the tomb of St Joseph the Betrothed. At the lowest end of the steps to the right side is located an ornate shrine around the Tomb of the Holy Theotokos. The shrine is decorated with Orthodox Chrisitian iconography and candles. The interior of the tomb is bare with all surrounding sides closed except two narrow openings for access and three holes in the wall for pilgrims to touch the internal area where the Holy Theotokos was laid to rest.

The Tomb of the Holy Dormition is administered by the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem Orthodox Patriarchate.
